Whose future?
Welcome to Labor Day weekend! Another chance “to honor the contributions and. . . strength of American workers” according to AI Overview, our modern-day Encyclopedia Brittannica. “A creation of the nineteenth century labor movement” that this century our offspring may want to rename. “Robot Day,” in recognition of labor’s replacement.
The worry a century ago was that labor-saving devices would leave us with too little to do when there would be plenty to do. We just wouldn’t be the ones doing it.
The world around us — on pace to become unrecognizable. In so many ways since we prepared at Andover that it’s hard to keep track. One being the quaint idea of the loyal opposition. The lynchpin of Democracy and self-questioning essential to character. Now being unpinned so opposition can be lynched.
A test of serenity, courage, and wisdom if we’re to make a difference. Our charge at Andover, when the class of ‘55 was taken aside for a motivational session in GW Hall, in September ’51. To be told that the future belonged to us. So one day we’d take charge. Today, it’s our grandchildren and the class of 2030. Who does their future belong to? Will they be able to take charge? Take charge of what?
